ABOUT
Through life experience we all construct beliefs about who we are and what we are capable of; some beliefs are helpful and some are not. Unfortunately for many of us, negative, unhelpful beliefs become the default thinking style or lens through which we view and experience the world.
By integrating elements of various therapeutic approaches we will work together to reduce the power that unhelpful beliefs (and the connected feelings or "felt sense") hold over your life direction and experience; the goal being for YOU to begin steering your life in the direction that you truly want to go.
My therapeutic style is warm, inviting, engaging, and hopeful. I work in a collaborative process, and do best with clients who are motivated to change. I also have a personal interest in working with clients interested in focusing on diet and lifestyle changes.
I have extensive experience working with adolescents and young adults in wilderness therapy programs and therapeutic boarding schools. My clients range in age from adolescents through older adults.
SERVICES
Depression
Clients struggling with depression receive acceptance and commitment therapy along with other modalities that involve developing acceptance of past events (and associated feelings), deriving meaning from past events, and developing mindfulness skills to become more flexible with thinking and behavior. Clients are encouraged to develop self-compassion and engage in outgoing behaviors, even though doing so may be difficult to initiate from a depressed state.
Anxiety
Clients are invited to explore sources of anxiety and consider cognitive and behavioral coping mechanisms that increase willingness to move in a valued direction regardless of the perceived obstacles in the way. Through processing thoughts and feelings related to anxiety in a safe space and learning new ways of coping, clients learn that although they may experience anxiety, it does not have to be the driving force in their life direction and limit their life experience.
Adolescents
As the adolescent brain grows so does the level of emotionality. Rather than experiencing new found unpleasant emotions, many adolescents turn toward avoiding experiences and tasks that may challenge their underdeveloped ability to cope. Through developing coping skills and focusing on core values, adolescent clients develop a stronger identity, while also strengthening their ability to navigate the challenges and related emotions that arise on their road to independence.
